What is Urolithin A?
Urolithin A is a compound that certain gut bacteria can produce from ellagic acid and ellagitannins in foods such as pomegranates, walnuts and some berries. It is being researched for effects on mitophagy and mitochondrial quality-control biology.[1-3]
Is Urolithin A found in pomegranates?
Pomegranates mainly provide precursor compounds. Gut bacteria may convert those precursors into Urolithin A. The amount produced varies greatly, so pomegranate juice and purified Urolithin A should not be treated as equivalent.[3]
Can everyone make Urolithin A naturally?
No. Production depends on the gut microbiome. In one study, around 40% of participants became substantial producers after pomegranate juice, while others produced little or none within the study period.[3] That percentage is not a universal diagnostic rule.
What is mitophagy?
Mitophagy is a regulated cellular process that identifies and recycles selected mitochondria. Urolithin A has activated mitophagy in experimental models and altered mitophagy-related markers in human studies.[1,2,5]
Does Urolithin A increase energy?
Human studies show effects on mitochondrial and metabolic markers, but they do not establish that every user experiences more subjective energy. A trial in older adults did not significantly improve maximal ATP production in the hand muscle compared with placebo.[4]
Does it improve muscle strength?
One four-month trial in middle-aged adults reported improvements in selected strength measures.[5] Another trial in older adults found better local muscle endurance but did not meet its primary walking or ATP outcomes.[4] More independent research is needed.
Is Urolithin A an anti-ageing supplement?
“Anti-ageing” is too broad. Urolithin A is being investigated for pathways that change with age, but there is no evidence that it reverses human ageing or extends human lifespan.[6]
Can it replace exercise?
No. Exercise affects muscles, bones, cardiovascular health, balance, metabolism and mental health through many pathways. No Urolithin A trial demonstrates equivalence to exercise.
Is Urolithin A the same as pomegranate extract?
No. Pomegranate extract contains precursor compounds and many other constituents. Purified Urolithin A provides the molecule directly. Labels and research interventions should be checked carefully.[3]
What amount is used in research?
Major repeated-dose trials have often used 500 mg or 1,000 mg daily for up to four months.[2,4,5] Study amounts are not personal recommendations and do not establish legal sale in every country.
Is Urolithin A safe?
It was generally well tolerated in short adult trials, including studies lasting four months.[2,4,5] Long-term use, interactions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children and many medical conditions remain insufficiently studied.
Can it interact with medicines?
Interactions have not been comprehensively characterised. Ask a pharmacist or doctor to review your medicines and exact product.
Is Urolithin A legal in the UK?
As of 21 July 2026, the FSA lists Urolithin A novel-food application RP1777 as in progress, and the ACNFP has requested further information.[13,14] Consumers and businesses should not assume that online availability equals lawful GB sale.
What is its status in the United States?
FDA issued a no-questions response to GRAS Notice 791 for specified uses of the notified Urolithin A ingredient in certain foods.[12] This does not approve disease claims, prove effectiveness or approve every product.
Is Urolithin A used in skincare?
Yes, it is emerging in cosmetics. Preliminary topical research has been reported, including a preprint, but evidence is not yet strong enough to describe it as a proven reversal of skin ageing.[10]
How can I compare products?
Check the exact Urolithin A amount, ingredient specification, finished-product testing, batch details, contaminants, manufacturing standards, full excipient list, regulatory status and whether the exact marketed formulation was studied.
Are expensive products more effective?
Price is not proof of purity, absorption or benefit. Compare cost per stated amount, quality documentation and evidence for the finished product.
How long does it take to work?
Studies measured outcomes after four weeks to four months, but there is no validated timetable for a consumer to “feel” an effect.[2,4,5,7] Immediate transformation claims are not supported.
Should I take Urolithin A for fatigue?
Urolithin A is not an established treatment for fatigue. Persistent or unexplained fatigue should be assessed because it can be associated with sleep problems, anaemia, thyroid disorders, infection, medication effects, mental-health conditions and other causes.
